Questions From Residents
Questions from residents
Over the past several months, I have had the privilege of speaking with hundreds of Ward 5 residents at your doors, over coffee, at community events, and through email. The questions below come directly from those conversations.
As the campaign continues, I will keep adding new questions and answers because I believe the best campaigns are built on listening, learning, and meaningful dialogue.

What is on your mind?
Have a question that is not answered here? I would love to hear from you. If it is a question others are asking too, I will add it here so everyone can benefit from the conversation.
Leadership Community Service Why are you running for City Council?
I decided to run because I love Burlington and want to be part of building an even stronger community.
Over the past several years, I have watched important decisions about growth, infrastructure, transportation, and community planning shape the future of our city. Rather than watching from the sidelines, I decided I want to be part of the solution.
Throughout my career in healthcare and consulting, I have worked with teams to solve complex problems, bring people together, and make thoughtful decisions in environments where priorities compete and resources are limited. Those are the same skills required of an effective councillor.
To me, the role of a councillor is not to have all the answers. It is to listen, ask thoughtful questions, understand the evidence, communicate openly, and work collaboratively to make decisions that are in the best interests of the community.
If elected, my commitment is simple: I will be a responsible steward of your trust, your tax dollars, and the future of Ward 5.
Decision-Making Accountability Planning How do you make decisions?
The best decisions do not begin with assumptions. They begin with understanding.
Before supporting any major investment or policy, I believe it is essential to understand the root cause of the problem we are trying to solve. This means engaging the people most affected, asking thoughtful questions, reviewing the evidence, considering financial impacts, and understanding how one decision may affect another.
Municipal issues are rarely simple. Growth, transportation, housing, affordability, infrastructure, recreation, and community well-being are all interconnected. This is why I believe decisions should never be made in isolation.
I have outlined my full Decision-Making Framework on my website because I believe residents deserve to understand not only what I believe, but how I will approach every decision I make on their behalf.
Growth Development Infrastructure How will you approach development in Ward 5?
Growth is one of the most important issues facing Burlington, particularly in Ward 5. The reality is that growth is coming. The question is not whether growth happens, it is whether we plan for it thoughtfully.
I believe growth must pay for growth. New development should contribute its fair share toward the infrastructure and services it requires so that growth does not shift additional costs onto existing taxpayers. But planning does not end when construction is complete. We also need to consider the long-term costs of operating and maintaining roads, parks, recreation facilities, stormwater infrastructure, and other municipal services.
To me, the most important question is this: Are we building communities that future taxpayers can sustain?
Growth should create complete communities, not future liabilities.
Residents also deserve to be informed throughout the process. Too often I have heard people say they did not know what was being proposed until decisions had already been made. As your councillor, I will improve communication, encourage meaningful public engagement, and work to make sure residents understand what is being proposed, why it is being considered, and how they can have input before decisions are made.
My role is not simply to cast a vote. It is to ask thoughtful questions, understand the evidence, advocate for Ward 5, and make decisions that leave Burlington stronger—not only for the people who live here today, but for the generations who will call it home tomorrow.
Engagement Communication Transparency How will you keep residents informed and engaged?
Effective communication is not something that happens during an election campaign—it should be how a councillor serves every day.
One of the most consistent pieces of feedback I have heard from residents is that they want to know what is happening in their community before decisions are made, not after. I believe meaningful engagement starts with transparency, clear communication, and creating opportunities for residents to have their voices heard.
If elected, I will provide regular updates on Council decisions, upcoming projects, and issues affecting Ward 5 through a variety of channels. I will continue knocking on doors, meeting residents for coffee, attending community events, and making myself available by phone, email, and social media. Different people prefer different ways of staying informed, and it is my responsibility to meet residents where they are.
I also want to introduce a more transparent way of reporting back to residents. Drawing on my professional experience, I would like to publish a simple quarterly "Ward 5 Report Card" that highlights the priorities I am working on, the progress we have made, what is coming next, and any challenges or risks residents should be aware of. My goal is to make it easy for people to understand not only what Council is doing, but how I am delivering on the commitments I have made.
Communication is a two-way conversation. My role is to represent Ward 5, not just at Council, but within the community itself. That means listening first, communicating often, and earning your trust through openness, accessibility, and accountability.
Affordability Taxes Fiscal Responsibility What is your approach to property taxes and City spending?
Residents work hard for their money, and City Hall has a responsibility to spend it wisely.
I do not believe every problem is solved by spending more, nor do I believe every budget should simply be cut. My responsibility as your councillor is to ensure every investment is supported by evidence, aligned with community priorities, and delivers meaningful value for residents. Shifting property tax increases onto residents is not a sustainable solution.
Throughout my career, I have helped organizations make difficult decisions by understanding the problem, evaluating the options, balancing competing priorities, and having the difficult conversations when tough choices need to be made. That is the same disciplined approach I will bring to Burlington’s budget.
Every decision Council makes has long-term financial implications. Before approving new initiatives, we should understand not only the upfront costs, but also the ongoing costs to operate and maintain them. To me, the most important question is this: Are we investing in services that residents value, and can taxpayers afford to sustain them over the long term?
Being fiscally responsible is not only about spending less. It is about spending wisely, making informed decisions, being transparent, and ensuring residents receive value for every tax dollar invested.
Commitment Transparency Service What can residents expect from you if you are elected?
Ward 5 deserves full-time attention.
If I am entrusted with the privilege of serving as your councillor, this will be my full-time job. I have made the decision to step away from my consulting career because I believe representing Ward 5 deserves my full attention.
Our community deserves a councillor who is present, accessible, and engaged. Not only during Council meetings, but in neighbourhoods, at community events, and in conversations with residents and businesses. It also means taking the time to prepare thoroughly, understand the complex issues, and build strong working relationships with the Mayor, fellow councillors, and City staff. The challenges facing Burlington are too complex for any one person to solve alone. Meaningful progress depends on collaboration, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to serving our community.
Residents can also expect transparency and follow-through. I will communicate openly throughout the decision-making process, explain the rationale behind my decisions, and report back to the community on what I have learned and what actions can realistically be taken.
Most importantly, I will continue doing what I have done throughout this campaign: showing up. Whether that is knocking on doors, meeting residents over coffee, attending community events, or responding to emails, I believe good representation starts with being present.
My commitment is simple: I will show up, I will listen, and I will follow through.
